Ingredients
- Olive Oil: Use a good quality extra virgin olive oil to brown the meat in.
- Ground Beef: I like to use 80/20 for flavor, but 90/10 also works well.
- Onion and Garlic: Adds nice aromatic flavor, just like a classic hamburger.
- Milk: Whole is preferred here.
- Original Bisquick® Mix: One of my favorite store-bought shortcuts, this gives the pie a fluffy, biscuit-like texture and buttery flavor.
- Eggs: Act as a binder to hold the pie together
- Worcestershire Sauce: Compliments the beef nicely and adds an umami punch.
- Cheddar Cheese: The cheese for this cheeseburger pie, sharp in flavor and perfectly melty.
How To Make Cheeseburger Pie
1. Preheat the oven to 400° . Spray 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray.
2. In a pan, add your olive oil and garlic. Cook for a minute. Then add your beef and onion, Worcestershire sauce, and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until beef is browned and crumbly, 8 to 10 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, whisk milk, Bisquick, and eggs together in a small bowl, salt and pepper
4. Drain beef and onion mixture; transfer to the prepared pie pan. Sprinkle with the cheddar cheese, and pour Bisquick mixture over top.

5. Bake in the preheated oven until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, about 25 minutes.

Expert Tips
- Best Beef Choice: Ground beef that’s 85/15 or 90/10 lean to fat ratio is ideal for the most flavor with a lower fat content. This will keep the pie from being too greasy and it’ll hold its shape and structure when sliced.
- Prevent a Soggy Crust: Be sure to get rid of extra grease and moisture in your beef filling before adding it to the pan. No one likes a soggy, mushy crust.
- Drain The Beef: Take time to really brown the beef for that nice, caramelized flavor. But be sure to drain the meat on a paper towel-lined plate afterwards to remove all of the excess grease and moisture. A greasy filling will affect the flavor and texture.
- Don’t over-bake the pie: Bake until the center is firm to touch and no longer jiggly, the top is golden brown, and an inserted toothpick or knife comes out clean. This is how you’ll know the pie is fully set and ready to eat. Don’t rush the cook time, it’s worth it.
- Shred Your Own Cheese: It’s a little extra effort but makes a huge difference. Freshly grated cheese melts nicely and has that gooey, melty texture. Pre-shredded cheese has a coating that prevents it from fully melting and creates a grainy texture.
- Adjust Seasoning: Don’t be afraid to add more salt, pepper, spices or Worcestershire once the beef is browned and the filling is mixed. Taste as you go and adjust as needed before baking.
Variations
- Use Different Proteins: Swap in ground turkey or chicken for a leaner, lighter hamburger pie.
- Add Bacon: Make this a bacon-cheeseburger pie by mixing in crispy, smokey bacon. Cook it ahead of time and chop into bite sized pieces before mixing into the beef. Alternatively you could sprinkle crumbled bacon on top of the pie before baking, too.
- Add Pickles: Mix in pickles or relish for even more classic cheeseburger flavor.
- Try Different Cheeses: Swap cheddar cheese for Colby Jack, Pepper Jack, Swiss or American for a different cheese flavor. These are all super melty, so all great options.
- Add Heat: Mix in spicy jalapeños or a few drops of hot sauce for a little kick.

Storage
Leftovers keep well and are perfect for dinner the next night. Store pie in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When you’re ready to serve again, reheat in the oven at 350-degrees, covered, until hot and the cheese is melty, about 15-20 minutes.
You can freeze this cheeseburger pie, too. Store cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight when you’re ready to enjoy, then reheat in the oven as instructed above.
You can make this dish ahead of time as a great time-saving dinner. Assemble and bake, then cool and store in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. Bring it to room temperature while the oven pre-heats, then bake per the instructions.
FAQs
Definitely, but you’ll want to replace it with a homemade “batter” using a mixture of flour, baking powder, milk and eggs. This will give the pie a similar savory golden “crust”.
A 9×13 pan usually serves a family or large group well. You could also use a 8 or 10 inch deep cast iron skillet or braiser.
Absolutely. Ground turkey would make a delicious and slightly leaner, lighter filling. But equally delicious!
If you don’t drain the beef really well to remove excess moisture and grease, the filling can end up watery or greasy. You also want to be sure to bake the pie long enough for the filling to fully set, otherwise it can be loose and liquid-like when you slice it.
