I had a few one too many containers of applesauce filling up the freezer and needed to make some room for a few others things I plan to freeze here soon. I used to make these bars all the time and completely forgot about them until I was in a pinch!

I used my homemade applesauce for this recipe and the bowl is always worth licking in the end. You do not need to use homemade applesauce and can use whatever you’d prefer! But if you’ve never tried to make it before, I encourage you to give it a whirl!

These bars are perfect to wrap up individually and serve on a chilly morning at a soccer game or to take to a gathering.

Let’s get started!

Prep Time 10 minutes mins
Cook Time 40 minutes mins
Total Time 50 minutes mins
Servings: 4
Course: Dessert, Snack
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter cut into small pieces
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup oats old fashioned is best
  • 2 cups applesauce

Method

  1. In a food processor pulse the butter, brown sugar and flour until mixture forms small, pea sized crumbs.
  2. Add cinnamon and oats and give a quick pulse.
  3. Place half the oat mixture in a lightly greased 9×13″ baking dish. Press mixture down with the back of a spoon.
  4. Pour applesauce on top of oat mixture and spread evenly over oat mixture.
  5. Sprinkle remaining oat mixture over applesauce and press down into applesauce gently.
  6. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes. 20 minutes into cooking press mixture back down into applesauce to make sure it all gets incorporated.
  7. Allow to fully cool before slicing.
