Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings (Sweet & Spicy Sauce)

If you’ve been searching for crispy air fryer chicken wings that taste like they came from your favorite sports bar—but without deep frying—this is the recipe you need. These easy air fryer wings come out ultra crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and are tossed in a bold, buttery blend of Sweet Baby Ray’s Original BBQ sauce and Frank’s RedHot for the perfect sweet and spicy finish.

Whether you’re making them for game day, a weeknight dinner, or a party appetizer, these air fryer chicken wings at 425 degrees are guaranteed to be a hit.

If I had to pick my favorite air fryer (and I’ve tried quite a few!) THIS is the one I’d go with!

Expert Tips

The secret to extra crispy chicken wings in the air fryer? Aluminum-free baking powder (NOT baking soda!).

Baking powder helps draw moisture to the surface of the skin. As the wings cook, that moisture evaporates, leaving behind perfectly crisp skin—without flour or breading. This method gives you that classic crispy texture you love from fried wings, but in a healthier, easier way.

Ingredients

Chicken Wings- Get the bag of party wings!
Aluminum Free Baking Soda- This is the KEY for crispy wings!
bbq sauce, hot sauce- You can jazz these wings up however you like but my personal favorite is the classic hot wing flavor.

How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Step 1: Prep the Wings

Pat your wings completely dry with paper towels. This step is crucial for achieving crispy skin. Any moisture left behind will create steam and prevent crisping.

Toss the wings with aluminum-free baking powder and salt until evenly coated.

Step 2: Air Fry

Spray the bottom of your air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray. Place the wings in a single layer, making sure they are flat and not overlapping.

Air fry at 425°F for 12–14 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Check the wings at the end of cooking time. If they need more crispiness or aren’t fully cooked, add 2–4 more minutes until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F.

Step 3: Make the Sauce

While the wings cook, melt the butter and stir in the BBQ sauce and hot sauce. Toss the fully cooked wings in the sauce mixture and serve immediately.

Expert Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Wings

1. Dry Them Thoroughly
Moisture is the enemy of crispiness. The drier the wings, the better the crunch.

2. Use Aluminum-Free Baking Powder
Regular baking powder can leave a metallic taste. Always double-check the label.

3. Don’t Crowd the Basket
For the crispiest air fryer chicken wings, cook in batches if necessary. Air needs to circulate around each wing.

4. Sauce After Cooking
Toss wings in sauce after they’re fully crisped. Adding sauce before air frying will soften the skin.

5. Want Extra Crispy Wings?
After saucing, return them to the air fryer for 2–3 minutes to “set” the sauce.

Flavor Variations

These air fryer chicken wings are easy to customize:

Garlic Parmesan Wings

Skip the BBQ and hot sauce. Toss wings in melted butter, minced garlic, and grated parmesan.

Honey Buffalo Wings

Add 1–2 tablespoons honey to the sauce mixture for a sweet heat twist.

Lemon Pepper Wings

Toss cooked wings with melted butter and lemon pepper seasoning for a zesty variation.

Dry Rub Wings

Use a blend of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne instead of sauce for crispy dry wings.

Storage & Reheating

How to Store

Store leftover wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

How to Reheat Air Fryer Wings

Reheat at 375°F for 4–6 minutes until heated through and crispy again.

Avoid microwaving if possible—it softens the skin.

Can You Freeze Air Fryer Wings?

Yes! Freeze cooked, unsauced wings in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Reheat straight from frozen in the air fryer at 400°F for 8–10 minutes.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Chicken Wings

  • Celery and carrot sticks
  • Ranch or blue cheese dressing
  • Loaded potato wedges
  • Mac and cheese
  • Coleslaw

These crispy wings are perfect for Super Bowl parties, tailgates, family dinners, or an easy protein-packed snack.

FAQs About Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Do I need to thaw wings before air frying?

Yes. For best results, thaw completely and pat dry before cooking.

Can I use frozen wings in the air fryer?

You can, but they won’t get as crispy. Cook longer and drain excess moisture halfway through.

Why use baking powder instead of flour?

Baking powder creates crisp skin without breading, making these wings gluten-free and lower in carbs.

What temperature is best for air fryer wings?

425°F is ideal for crispy skin and juicy meat.

How do I know when chicken wings are done?

They should reach an internal temperature of 165°F. The skin should be golden brown and crispy.

Final Thoughts

These crispy air fryer chicken wings with sweet and spicy sauce are proof that you don’t need a deep fryer to get restaurant-quality wings at home. The baking powder trick guarantees that irresistible crunch, while the buttery BBQ and hot sauce combo delivers bold flavor in every bite.

If you’re looking for an easy air fryer recipe that’s perfect for entertaining or weeknight dinners, this one deserves a permanent spot in your rotation.

The best crispy chicken wings you'll ever make!

Prep Time 20 minutes mins
Cook Time 20 minutes mins
Servings: 4 people
Course: Appetizer
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken Wings
  • Aluminum Free Baking Powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ¼ cup BBQ Sauce
  • ¼ cup Hot Sauce ( I like franks red hot!)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • avocado oil (spray kind)

Method

  1. 1. I love the both wings and drums and usually get a big bag of the party wings when I'm making wings. First you want to pat your wings dry (this is important!). Coat in baking powder and add salt and toss well. You want to make sure the wings are thoroughly coated.
    2. Spray the bottom of the airfryer with cooking spray and place wings individually, making sure they are each flat. I then like to spray the tops with oil. Airfry 425℉ degrees for 12-14 minutes, flipping half way through. You might need to adjust the time depending on how thick the wings are.
    3. Check the wings after fully cooking and adjust a few minutes if they still need cooked. In a sauce pan, I add the bbq sauce, hot sauce and butter. I heat until the butter is melted and then toss the wings in the sauce and serve with blue cheese and veggies!
