Grandma's Spaghetti Pie

Grandma's Spaghetti Pie

This is one of my favorite dishes... EVER! it's my grandmothers recipe, something she would make for me all the time and deliver it herself. As time grew and I got older my grandmother and I spent a whole lot of time together, weekly lunch dates, grocery trips, Sunday lunches spent on the couch watch QVC and I would make her spaghetti pie in her kitchen so she would have it throughout the week when I left.

I used to make enough so we could freeze some, take it out at a later time, thaw it and put it into the oven for an easy dinner night.

Not a day goes by that I don't think about my grandma and when I make this dish, I remember her in her kitchen as she would make it for me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Let's get started!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 box angel hair pasta
  • 1/2 pound ground beef
  • 1.5 cups tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cups ricotta
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Italian cheese
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp Italian spices
  • 1 tbsp garlic salt

Instructions

    1. Get your ground beef cooked up. I like to add in my own spices such as salt & pepper, garlic salt, and of course we can't forget the 21 salute!
    2. While your meat is cooking get your pot of boiling water going for the noodles, your sauce heated up and get your ricotta mixture ready to go. Once the water is boiling add the noodles.
    3. In a small bowl add the ricotta, egg, Parmesan, Italian seasonings and give it a good stir.
    4. Once your noodles are cooked, drain the noodles and place back in the pot. Ladle in half of the sauce to coat the noodles.
    5. Now let's build the pie! Take a deep dish pie pan, make sure it's greased so the noodles don't stick, add in your noodles, enough to cover the bottom. Make a well in the middle of the noodles and add the meat, place your ricotta on top and smooth it out. Sprinkle the Italian cheese on top.
    6. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes, set to broil for a minute.
    7. Serve with garlic bread and the remainder of the sauce

Notes

** A few tips! If you don't like ricotta I suggest using cottage cheese as a substitute! If you are doubling the meal to freeze some pies, buy some tin pie pans, build your pie, tin foil twice and place in Ziploc Freezer bags for future dinners!
