DIY Plaid Board and Batten Wall
I created this DIY plaid board and batten wall to add texture and character to a standard room, and it turned out beautifully! It adds so much visual interest to an otherwise boring space. Materials
- 1x6x8 pine boards: quantity depends on how large your wall is- I used 8 boards
- Caulk
- Wood filler
- Paint
Tools
- Miter saw
- Table saw
- Nail gun
- Measuring tape
- Level
Instructions
- I took my 1x6x8 boards and ripped them on my table saw into 1 inch pieces
- Next, I measured the width of my wall and divided by 2 to get the center of the room as a starting point for my first board
- Then, I used one of my pieces, cut to size, my “jig” as I call it, and I used this as a divider to measure where my other two boards were placed to create the 3 board grouping for the “plaid” look.
- After this, I measured out 2 feet from my last board to find where to nail up my next center board for the next grouping of 3 vertical pieces. I then repeated this process to cover the entire width of the wall. I used a nail gun to secure the pieces to the wall as you can see in my highlight reel! TIP: I used my level as I was nailing to ensure all the boards were straight as I worked throughout the room
- For the horizontal pieces I used the same method as above, measuring 2 feet between groupings, and making sure my boards were level as I went along.
- To fill in little gaps within the plaid design, I cut small square pieces of wood and used 1 ¼ inch brad nails to secure them to the wall. This made for a seamless look once it was painted! This step is optional, but I love the way it turned out!
- After all the pieces were secured to the wall, I used wood filler for the nail holes and gave it a quick sanding. I added caulk to any gaps between the wall and wood accent pieces.
-TIP: make sure you buy a paintable caulk (most are) if you plan to caulk some areas and then paint it all!
8. Finally, I painted it Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams in an eggshell finish. I absolutely LOVE how this turned out! It gives the room so much character and was not too challenging!
