If there’s one recipe that captures the scent and sweetness of fall, it’s homemade apple butter. This slow cooker version is effortless, delicious, and makes your home smell absolutely incredible while it cooks. It’s smooth, spiced, and perfect for spreading on toast, pancakes, or even stirring into oatmeal.
What I love most about this recipe is how simple it is! Just a handful of ingredients and plenty of slow cooking time to bring out that deep caramelized flavor. The result? A thick, velvety apple butter that tastes like autumn in a jar.

Apple butter is so versatile – spread it on warm toast, swirl it into Greek yogurt, or spoon it over pancakes or waffles. It also makes a thoughtful homemade gift! Just pour it into small jars, tie a bit of ribbon around the lid, and you’ve got the perfect fall treat to share.

Prep the apples: Place your chopped apples into a large slow cooker.
Add the sweetness and spice: Sprinkle in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Give everything a good stir to coat the apples evenly.
Slow cook to perfection: Cover and cook on LOW for 10–12 hours, stirring occasionally, until the apples are deeply brown, caramelized, and very soft.
Blend it smooth: Use an immersion blender directly in the slow cooker (or transfer to a blender in batches) until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Add flavor and thicken (optional): Stir in the vanilla extract, then cook uncovered on LOW for another 1–2 hours if you prefer a thicker texture.
Cool and store: Let your apple butter cool completely before transferring it to jars. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or freeze for up to 6 months.
